Happy New Year, Hackers!

It’s been a while since our last product update, but don’t worry - we’ve been working hard on new features for you, including a way to mint your HackerNoon name, a new tech stack migration, and a whole documentary!

This product update reflects changes to the platform from October 26th until December 31st, 2023.

Mint Your Name on HackerNoon

HackerNoon has teamed up with namespace.gg to hook you up with FREE web3 identities. This move tackles the issues we've had with old-school online identities, especially the privacy headaches on Web2 sites. HackerNoon's web3 identities make it easy for users to connect their profiles to any wallet they like, without needing to be remembered as long text strings.

For example, my wallet is hackerhodl.hackernoon, which is infinitely more user-friendly than saying my wallet address is 0xjbjbhkb75e7tf8f8yfdeswgyg67f346ss6esxye (this is a randomly typed string - do not send ETH to this address - lol).

How To Mint Your Web3 Identity on HackerNoon

  1. Log in to your HackerNoon account and navigate to your profile > web3 section.

  2. Click on ‘Connect Wallet’ and sign the transaction to link any Metamask-compatible wallet address to your HackerNoon account.

  3. Once it's connected, hit 'Mint Namespace,' sign the transaction, and boom – no fees for HackerNoon contributors!

  4. Your_username.hackernoon is now minted and linked to your wallet. In my case, it's Hackerhodl.hackernoon.

That’s it - your web3 identity has been created and linked to your wallet address.

For the tech enthusiasts amongst us, here’s the documentation on how it works under the hood.

Web 2.5 Documentary is live!

HOLY SHIT THE DOCUMENTARY (yes!) HackerNoon team has been working on for over a year is finally out!! Web 2.5, HackerNoon’s original documentary, premiered last December 25th and already counts over 2K views.

What’s Web 2.5 about?

The Web 2.5 Documentary follows the thrilling, and occasionally turbulent, journey of the internet, from dial-up modems to social media supremacy; from user-friendly and easily accessible information to giant paywalls and mass misinformation.

Somewhere along the line, we f**ked up…

In this documentary, HackerNoon explains how that line was crossed and whether or not Web3 can help us fix the internet.

Curious? Watch the trailer here and find us on IMDB here.

Here’s what people are saying about Web 2.5

Flaunt Your Job Title on Your Profile Page

Your profile page can now harbor more details about you, including your current and past job titles and company, location, plus options to display total reading time, show bookmarks on your profile, and disclose whether you represent a company or brand.

To update your profile with these details, just go to app.hackernoon.com/profile and update as you like. Hit save when you’re done and you’ll see your profile updated!

Import Your Stories From Around the Web

Importing stories from other platforms has been an option on HackerNoon’s editor for a while now, but in case you’ve missed it, here is what it looks like:

It allows you to import your stories from RSS, Medium, Dev.to and Hashnode. You only need to go to your profile page -> import -> type your links or usernames -> click the import button. Alternatively, you can just visit your writer dashboard, select import story, and add your link to import. Et voilá, no excuse to keep your work from HackerNoon!

Startups of the Year 2023: The End

2023 Startups of the Year has come to an end. The flagship event counted over 30K startups from over 4K cities and a total of 623,756 votes. We’ll announce all the winners soon, and in addition to the award itself, they can expect exclusive interview spots, an exclusive NFT from HackerNoon, and a .Tech Domain for life.

The winners will be announced soon - keep an eye on our Startups of the Year page for the results!

That’s all for now!
